The paper presents the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics position concerning methods and techniques of overweight and obesity management and their update in relation to new evidence-based research. The expansion also involves the inclusion of the socioecological approach to interventions as well as provides evidence regarding policy-level and community-based measures. The socioecological model stresses the interplay of internal and external factors in success achievement while emphasizing the importance of interpersonal influences. Thus, intervention targets “intrapersonal-level factors that assist with changing energy balance behaviors” (Raynor & Champagne, p. 131). It uses community-based interventions as the primary method.
The authors provide dietary-focused recommendations and patterns, such as types and amount of desirable nutrition intake, eating frequency, the timing of eating, and others, as well as the methodology of activity intervention. The paper considers opportunities and challenges posed by social media in the field of nutrition and dietetics practice. While experts and individuals can profit from developing their mutual online interactions, both groups can also suffer from untrusted information and professional misconduct. The Academy provides guidance for practitioners that take into account both ethics and professionalism. The fundamental premises are the necessity to follow the same Code of Ethics that directs all other areas of practice, position the information in the stream of science-based and evidence-based standards, and “avoid mistakes and misjudgments involving ethics, professionalism, transparency, and disclosure” (Helm & Miller, p. 1826). In this paper, various national and professional social media policies were analyzed and summarized to provide practitioners with guidelines on their online conduct, professionalism standards, and social media best practices.
