It is not a secret that communication is a complicated process of interaction and relationship-building between individuals. Since it includes many details and is influenced by different factors, misunderstandings and conflicts are almost inevitable. For this reason, when talking about communication in business, which also has its characteristics and distinguishing features, this issue becomes even more complex. When interacting in a business environment, individuals have to be prepared and ready to use all the skills concerning conflict resolution and mutual respect. Therefore, the following paper will discuss the main communication challenges faced by people in the field of business both in and outside of the workplace.
This research will be based on the analysis of the already existing data on the topic of communication challenges in business. There is a big number of researches that concerns communication in a business environment, and they also include case studies that present real-life examples in organizations and enterprises. Thus, by collecting, reading, and evaluating the information, it will be possible to distinguish what are the main problems that individuals are faced with while being in and outside of a workplace environment.
It is obvious that one communication challenge that can arise in the business workplace concerns organizational strategies and goals. As mentioned by Dwyer (2019), it is essential for the members of a business to have the same understanding of the right path that the organization has to follow. Therefore, the challenge appears when the ideas are not communicated effectively enough to all the employees.
Another communication challenge appears when an organization is an international one with a number of people from different cultures and ethical backgrounds. For instance, Jhaiyanuntana and Nomnian (2019) discussed “Thai undergraduate hotel interns’ intercultural communication challenges and strategies” (p. 2014). Considering the fact that people from different countries have distinct opinions and perspectives on topics, it is easy to end up in a communicative dilemma or argument.
Talking about challenges outside of a workplace, it can be stated that they generally arise as a result of differences in the environment. For example, while communicating in an office, employees consider their top management to be authoritative and controlling (McFarland, 2020). However, once they find themselves out of a workplace it is harder to find common ground in communication because of the absence of titles and positions.
This research presented only a few of the many communication problems that arise in business both in and out of the workplace. There are many more of them, and what has to be done is the improvement of communication for the purpose of preventing those challenges. Individuals have to educate themselves about effective ways of solving conflicts, finding common ground, and building relationships with different cultures. Without acquiring the necessary knowledge, it will be impossible to improve the issues of communication in business.
Conclusion and Recommendations
Overall, the main communication challenges discussed in the paper are the ones based on the inability to deliver goals and ideas properly, cultural differences, and inconsistency between communication styles in the workplace and in real life. In order to manage these problems, people have to be educated and prepared for challenges. Therefore, it is highly recommended that future research would focus on proving individuals with effective solutions to the existing issues and ways of preventing communication problems in business.
