Divorce happens as a result of failed marriages; therefore, it is right to conclude that not all marriages are successful. There is no winner in divorce since it involves several issues such as support, child custody, and property division. It is in a few cases that the spouse obtains what they desire during the process of separation. For example, one person might have custody of children but receive much lower financial spousal support. During a divorce, most life-transforming decisions appear to be the topic of discussion, for instance, determining whether the family house should be sold or not. However, it is vital not to rush when making decisions before the entire divorce process is completed.

The impact of divorce is felt by both spouses; for example, the feeling of loneliness and probably depression for losing a partner. Subsequently, some people develop a social phobia, anger, anxiety, and confusion. As such, they become incapable of attending to daily chores and even doing work. Therefore, partners should be considerate before resolving to file divorce papers. Filing a divorce is something that can be done by both partners in a registered relationship through the court. It reserves the right to terminate the marriage only if there is credible information beyond reasonable doubt to execute the judgment.

The long-term effects happen mostly on minors and women, and partially on men. However, the parents may continue living their lives separately after several years, but the children are permanently affected. Some devastating effects in children include low academic concentration, inability to socialize with others, low self-esteem, and increased psychological maladjustment symptoms. Consequently, children from divorced parents score lower on several indicators of psychological, socioeconomic, and interpersonal wellbeing, as they transit from childhood to adulthood.
