Look Back
Last week we went for a virtual simulation that required us to test our critical thinking skills, whereby I learned that I should improve my capabilities.
Elaborating the Experience
The event involved critical thinking and ways that a nurse should respond to emergency cases. Moreover, healthcare practitioners should ensure that they make the right decisions since they deal with critical conditions involving life and death. Therefore, the instructor gave us five emergency cases to solve that involve the primary interventions of a nurse during emergencies. Thus, the question-and-answer simulation encouraged me to be more alert when handling different situations in the clinical setting.
I felt that I need to improve my decision-making skills by interacting more with experienced healthcare providers. Additionally, I learn that I should be more knowledgeable to handle any situation since it is a fast-paced environment that requires an individual to make critical decisions. I also think that others felt the same way since the questions were challenging and required students to learn about making accurate decisions. The outcomes were that most of the students did not have the needed skills to answer the questions. I also got too overwhelmed with too much information in my mind for a short period. Thus, I learned that I should focus on ways that can help me improve my skills to handle different emergencies appropriately. Knowledge application is one of the CNO professional standards that relate to the issue of critical thinking. It ensures that all nurses can identify and address practice-related issues and planning approaches to provide care and services to the client (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2009). The standard is also vital in ensuring that nurses use their skills to provide excellent patient care.
Analyzing the Outcomes
The outcomes revealed that nurses should improve their decision-making skills to guarantee that they can improve the quality of patient care. Consequently, one can learn the CNO professional standards ensure that nurses can apply their knowledge in clinical settings (College of Nurses of Ontario, 2009). Additionally, decision-making in nursing practice is impacted by both technical and cognitive aspects. Hence, the outcomes of the exercise revealed that one should focus on critical thinking skills in different situations.
Revising the Approach
The approach to develop my critical thinking skills will be adjusted to ensure that I am more proficient in my career. For instance, I will focus on the CNO professional standards that can enhance my profession. Additionally, learning new strategies worked well in the approach due to literature with credible information about developing one’s critical thinking skills. Nonetheless, one of the issues that I would change in the approach is how I make the decisions independently. Thus, I would ensure that I consult knowledgeable clinicians to help me gain more knowledge about various procedures in the clinical setting.
New Perspective
A new approach can also be practiced to improve my learning skills. In this case, I would ensure that I interact with other individuals who have been working in healthcare facilities and ask questions regarding different situations. Moreover, I can focus on ways that emergencies are handled to avoid poor patient outcomes. The plan will also involve reading more books about different clinical approaches that involve critical thinking and decision-making. Recommendations for learning may involve being part of a team that deals with emergencies and learning from experienced individuals about ways of dealing with challenging situations.
